The Department of Home Economics Education (DHEEd) has once again demonstrated excellence in the recent IAADS (Internal Academic Assessment Development System) evaluation.
Earlier this year, on May 23, 2025, the UP Diliman Quality Assurance Office (QAO) hosted “Kahusayan: Seremonya ng Pagkilala ng Kagalingan sa QA”, celebrating outstanding contributions to quality assurance within the university. During this event, fourteen academic units were recognized. Among them was the department, which demonstrated an unwavering commitment to maintaining high standards in academic assessment and continuous improvement. And this recognition highlights the department’s continuous pursuit of excellence.
At the CU-Level (Constituent University), DHEEd is recognized as one of the units with notable performances in both the Overall Track Record and Teaching Performance. This highlights the department’s consistent efforts in maintaining high standards in teaching and academic contributions within the university.
At the Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster level, DHEEd secured Rank 1st in both Overall Track Record and Teaching Performance, which demonstrates their leadership and exemplary performance within the cluster. Additionally, the department achieved Rank 3rd in Research Output, which showcases its dedication to advancing research excellence and innovation. These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work, collaboration, and unwavering commitment of the faculty, staff, and students
What do the DHEEd faculty members, students, staff, and alumni have to say about this achievement?
Strong Faculty Expertise, Supportive Structure, and Authentic Student-Centered Approach
Vanessa Zabala, a current PhD student, highlights the faculty’s strong academic backgrounds, training, and professional experience. She observes that their approach balances empathy with high academic standards, creating a rigorous yet supportive learning environment. She adds, “Our courses are well-structured and aligned with the department's goals, and we are consistently guided and supported throughout the process. This strong teaching performance, along with a clear research agenda that motivates both faculty and students, places the department among the top achievers.”
Current PhD students Realyn Salvador and Irish Achondo highlight the department’s focus on genuine student development and its faculty's expertise. Ms. Salvador reflects on the authentic guidance, support, and collaborative effort that build a sense of integrity and purpose:“The department never fails to meet its students' needs, as I experienced and felt the authentic guidance and support in every learning experience. The achievement is the real result of the department's collaborative effort in building a home economics perspective within the four walls of the classroom.” Ms. Achondo notes that the faculty’s expertise and intentional instructional delivery align with the department’s vision, producing coherent and meaningful outputs: “Their instructional delivery is intentionally structured to align with the department’s vision, mission, and goals, guiding us to produce outputs that are coherent, meaningful, and aligned with the department’s research agenda.”
Organized Programs and Practical Course
Alumna Annathea Balgoa attributes the department’s success to its organization; “I have noticed that throughout my college life, all the programs taught were interdependent and had a clear, unified purpose.” She added that despite its size, the department’s programs are interconnected and grounded in real-world applications.
Lecturer and alumna Atty. Jeanelle Tamoro-Cruz describes HEEd as practical and relevant: “It's the kind of feedback I usually receive from my students. They don’t have to question whether they’ll actually use what they’ve learned after graduation.”
Dedication and Genuine Commitment
Raisa Nicole Parinas, a former HE Rep and alumna, attributes the department’s excellence to the genuine passion for teaching and learning that is at the core of DHEEd. She reflects, “Nothing is more encouraging than the consistent dedication of our faculty and staff, who ensure that we not only learn but fully understand and actualize our lessons in real life. They achieve this through creative and engaging teaching methods that make learning both meaningful and memorable.”
Former staff Issa Iñigo captures the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose: “From the moment I assumed my position, I already felt the direction and vision they have for the Department—and maybe that’s why the department is always busy, in a good way. They all have a dedicated heart to deliver quality education to their students. Everyone is very open and engaged in academic discussions, especially when there are things to develop or instructional materials to improve.”
Alumna and senior lecturer Dr. Fema Aquino also believes that the department’s success stems from the sincere commitment of its faculty to provide quality education. She points out that teaching with honesty, high standards, and compassion plays a vital role. Aquino states, “We teach with honesty, high standards, and deep care. Caring for us means guiding them patiently, bringing out their strengths, and helping them grow without fear or pressure.” She also emphasizes that mentorship and research are integral: “Personally, I witness how committed, collaborative, and sincere our faculty members are. Ramdam mo talaga ang malasakit at pagtutulungan, and this culture of excellence and care is what makes all our achievements possible. I’m truly proud to be part of it!”
Shared Vision, Teamwork and Supportive Community
Dr. Consuelo Chua, former chairperson and current faculty member, highlights the department’s admirable teamwork, warm working environment, and shared dedication to common goals. She shares, “Everyone in the department does her part, not mainly for personal gain, but out of love for DHEEd. The department's focus on being happy, on top of being productive, is the icing on the cake. We enjoy what we do and are proud of our work. In colloquial terms, "lahat kami ay masasayang bibo kid at naghahawaan kami sa pagiging bibo" - hence, this great achievement.”
Lastly, Asst. Prof. Mary Justine Clarise Amonoy-Trinidad, the current chairperson, attributes their success to a shared vision among the members of the faculty. She affirms, “Faculty and staff, as well as students and alumni, are supportive and cooperative in the plans, projects, programs, and other initiatives that we have, and we are open to listening to each other’s opinions and advises when necessary to ensure that we can create the impact that we aim for and that realizing our vision is within our reach. I really love my department! I can’t ask for a better one.”
This collective dedication, shared vision, and sincere care for students and the university community are what sustain the department’s high standards and continuous milestones in quality assurance.
