The Department of Home Economics Education is delighted to share the successful interview of Assistant Professor Ma. Afrecita Nieva on DZUP Balita, a prominent news program that covers important issues not only concerning the university but also society at large. The interview, scheduled on February 9, 2026, via Zoom, focused on the vital topic of saving habits as we approach the year 2026.
In this 15-minute segment, Assistant Professor Nieva from the UP Diliman College of Home Economics provided insightful tips and practical advice on how Filipinos can improve their saving habits. She began by describing the current saving behaviors of Filipino families, emphasizing the importance of financial planning, such as life insurance. She highlighted that unlike families in other countries, many Filipinos lack sufficient savings or multiple insurance policies to protect their loved ones in case of emergencies. Factors like low salaries and financial instability contribute to this issue.
Assistant Professor Nieva also discussed the challenges Filipinos face in saving money. She pointed out that social media offers numerous suggestions, but many people struggle to implement them, especially when unforeseen emergencies arise. Common problems include prioritizing material possessions—like branded gadgets such as iPhones—over essential savings. She stressed the importance of teaching children at a young age to live simply and appreciate a modest lifestyle.
Regarding how much of one's income should go into savings, Assistant Prof. Nieva shared advice from financial consultants: ideally, around 10-20%. However, understanding that not everyone can sustain this, she encouraged Filipinos to identify small daily savings—such as skipping Starbucks or fast food—and setting aside the money instead. She emphasized that luxuries should be reserved for once a month, and everyday expenses should be minimized.
The interview also addressed savings tips for minimum wage earners in the informal sector. Many work as tricycle drivers, jeepney drivers, construction workers, or housewives managing household chores. Some have started small businesses like sari-sari stores to generate additional income. Assistant Professor Nieva advised exploring creative ways to save, including opening digital bank accounts, using e-wallets like GCash, and being mindful of online security. She encouraged viewers to identify their skills and consider entrepreneurial ventures as alternative income sources.
Lastly, the interview highlighted that, despite recognizing the importance of saving, many Filipinos still struggle to make saving a regular habit. Assistant Professor Nieva pointed out that rising prices of basic goods and fuel, coupled with stagnant wages, pose significant challenges. She encouraged viewers to begin with small steps—asking themselves, "What can I save today?"—and emphasized the importance of being vigilant and resourceful in managing their lifestyle choices.
In closing, Assistant Professor Nieva expressed her wishes for everyone to be progressive and have a happy year ahead. She hopes that her tips inspire Filipinos to develop better saving habits and financial resilience.
