The Department of Home Economics Education, together with the UP Circle of Home Economists, recently welcomed the freshmen and new students of the department through a short orientation, themed “Planted,” held last September 20 at Gusali 2B.
The program hosted by Menshie Alvez and Keeshia Esguerra started off with a short ice breaker, which was facilitated by Jaime Guimbao, for the students to warm up and get to know each other. Then, DHEEd Chair Asst. Prof. Justine Trinidad welcomed the students and formally opened the program with a short message.
This was followed by the orientation proper, where Assoc. Prof. Joanne Bantang introduced the students to the HE programs. Here, Assoc. Prof. Bantang explained the BS Home Economics program and introduced the members of the department to the students. The students were then presented with the College’s educative goals, the disciplinal framework of Home Economics Education, and the BSHE program curriculum.
Assoc. Prof. Bantang also gave a few tips to help the students navigate through their UP and BSHE life. The students were encouraged to take the Licensure Exam for Teachers and to follow the prescribed program of study. The students were also given an overview of the many career opportunities they can find with a BSHE degree, as Assoc. Prof. Bantang presented alumni from various fields such as education, food and food service, business management, entrepreneurship, and even paths such as law and policy making, medicine, and media.
After the orientation proper, Keeshia Esguerra introduced the students to the UP Circle of Home Economists. The upcoming activities of the organization were presented, and the students were invited to apply when applications open in October.
Finally, the program was concluded with a short message from Ms. Alexa Metrio, UP CHEc’s adviser, who once again welcomed them to the department and wished them luck in their studies. The students were assured that the department’s young and vibrant team will always be ready to give assistance when needed. As the students left the hall, they were treated to some taho and sweet corn for snacks.
