Last November 29, the Department of Home Economics Education hosted the first -ever session of the Home Economics Education Lecture Series, or HEELS, with the topic “Making Sense of One’s Competencies and Why it Matters.”
Mr. Casto M. Ignacio, RPsy, a mental and organizational health psychologist, shared his expertise and explained what competencies are, how they are built, and what competencies are most looked for in the workplace. The participants, composed of students, staff, and professionals from different colleges and backgrounds, also learned about how to relate their own competencies to their personal styles. Particularly, Mr. Ignacio emphasized the importance of flexing one’s own style in the workplace. The short talk was followed by an open forum, where participants asked about how to better apply their new learnings in the workplace.
This session is the first of the Home Economics Education Lecture Series (HEELS), an initiative meant to address the possible gap in leadership skills of students by providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom. The series will focus on leadership development and essential competencies that students would need for academic success, practicum courses, fieldwork, and research. Through this initiative, the Department hopes to develop well-rounded individuals who are ready to become leaders and contributors to their families and communities.
The lectures are open to students, faculty, and staff from other programs and colleges. To learn more about upcoming HEELS talks and other activities of the Department of Home Economics Education, you may visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/heedche.upd.
