For many, graduation marks the culmination of years of hard work. For BS Home Economics graduate Jaime P. Guimbao, it also marked the completion of a journey that began with a second chance, his return to the University of the Philippines Diliman and the College of Home Economics after decades away from school.
Jaime first entered the UP Diliman College of Home Economics as a student of the then Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Administration (HRA) program, now the Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management (BSHRIM). However, the sudden death of his father due to a heart attack compelled him to leave school and prioritize work. Over the next years and decades, he built a successful career in the corporate world, particularly in the field of human resources. Yet despite his professional accomplishments, one aspiration remained unchanged: to become a teacher.
Determined to pursue that dream, Jaime made the difficult decision to leave his job in 2019 and return to school. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed his plans and brought financial uncertainty, he remained firm and motivated in pursuing his goal. And in 2023, after years of waiting and perseverance, he finally returned to the University, this time as a BS Home Economics student in the very same college where he had once begun his college academic journey.
Returning to the classroom after a long time being away meant adapting to a vastly different learning environment. Technology has transformed the way the classes are conducted, the way students learn, do research, and submit coursework. Despite these changes, Jaime embraced every challenge with determination and viewed each one as an opportunity to grow. His dedication was reflected in his academic performance, and he consistently demonstrated excellence throughout his stay in his degree program. More importantly, he saw every achievement as a way of honoring the opportunity to complete the education he had once been forced to set aside.
Beyond academics, Jaime immersed himself in opportunities to serve his college and the University. He was elected as the HE Representative of the CHE Student Council during Academic Year 2024-2025, encouraging fellow students to become more involved in school initiatives and service. During enrolment periods, he volunteered as a Registration Assistant for the CHE Office of the College Secretary and the Department of Home Economics Education. He also served as a Student Assistant at the UP Diliman Asian Center and later at the Sampaguita Residence Hall, balancing these responsibilities alongside his studies. Service soon became one of the defining aspects of Jaime's UP journey. Through his volunteer work with UP Diliman Ugnayan ng Pahinungód, he discovered that his greatest fulfillment came not from recognition, but from helping others. Even after graduation, Jaime plans to continue serving as a Pahinungód volunteer, believing that service does not end with earning a degree. This conviction resonated deeply with the University's graduation theme, "Paglingkuran ang Sambayanan," which, for him, captures the true essence of being a UP student. Academic excellence, he believes, finds its highest purpose when it is used in service of the people.
Looking back, Jaime credits much of his success to the people who supported him throughout his journey. He fondly recalls the support and encouragement he received from the faculty and staff of the Department of Home Economics Education, whose kindness and guidance helped him navigate the challenges of returning to school. He is also grateful to the management of the Sampaguita Residence Hall for the opportunity to be one of the dormitory’s residents and Student Assistants. Their support reminded him that earning a degree is never an individual accomplishment. Rather, it is made possible by people who believe in one's potential.
As he graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, Jaime carries with him not only meaningful experiences but also recognition for his dedication both inside and outside the classroom. His academic excellence was honored with the Academic Merit Award, presented by the Home Economics Education faculty to graduates who attained a General Weighted Average (GWA) between 1.4501-1.7501. During the College of Home Economics Recognition Program held on July 4, 2026, he also received a Certificate of Recognition from the “UP Diliman Ugnayan ng Pahinungód” for his participation in the “Psychosocial Support Program 2026”, recognizing his commitment to volunteerism and service.
More important than the awards, however, is the renewed sense of purpose he carries with him. Jaime returned to UP with a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher, but along the way, he realized that his purpose extended beyond the classroom. His years in the College of Home Economics and at UP Diliman taught him that education finds its greatest meaning not only in shaping future generations, but also in uplifting individuals, families, and communities through service.
For those who think it is too late to return to school, Jaime offers a simple yet powerful reminder: It is never too late to begin again. For him, returning to UP Diliman and College of Home Economics was more than a second chance. It was the journey that ultimately led him home.
