HE Art Contest 2024: Capturing the Heart of Home Economics Through Art

by: Ma. Alyza Byan E. Tiotangco

How do you envision families of the future? How do home economists make homes, families, and consumers of the future safe, happy and healthy? These are the questions posed to the members of the UP CHE community – students, faculty, staff, and alumni – during the HE Art Contest held last February to March 2024 by the UP College of Home Economics, through the Department of Home Economics Education. The contest was held in celebration of the World Home Economics Day 2024, with the theme “Home Economics 3.0: A Critical Update.”

Officially launched on February 5 through the Department’s Facebook page, the HE Art Contest aimed to use art to capture the heart of HE Discipline – the thoughtful provision of food, clothing, education, shelter, good health, safety, happiness, and other basic needs of families and households. The contest also supported the Sustainable Development Goals 3 Good Health and Wellbeing, 5 Gender Equality, and 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The HE Art Contest participants challenged their creativity by uniquely showcasing their answers to the questions posed above through original two-dimensional artworks, either digital or traditional. Submissions were accepted from February 5 to March 31 and were then judged by a jury panel composed of esteemed UP CHE professors.

On April 19, 2024, the Department finally announced its most awaited roster of winners through a Facebook post. April Rain Bunao’s “Heartfelt Homecoming” emerged as the Grand Prize winner, bringing home Php 7,000. In this outstanding piece, Bunao expressed how the role of home economists may not always be visible, but are truly felt in all the things that nourish the soul: a satisfying meal, comfortable clothes, a warm family, and a supportive community.

Four winners also took home the Consolation Prize, each bagging Php 1,000. Anathea T. Balgoa’s “Where the Worlds Meet” is a digital piece that plays around with the concept of space and the cosmic universe to explain how many of the activities of the current world are rooted in Home Economics. Another Consolation Prize winner, Paula Denise C. de Villa’s “Pot of Growth,” likens home economists to gardeners who monitor and assist people to grow and reach their fullest potential by providing them with their needs. Meanwhile, Charissa Izabelle L. Tingzon’s digital work entitled “Puzzle Pieces of Home” showcases the different areas of Home Economics through puzzle pieces that together create a home for the family. Finally, “Bayan Muna Bago ang Sarili” is a digital artwork by Rafael Job S. Yadao, portraying the Filipino value of Bayanihan in the field of Home Economics and its impact on the future of the Filipino community.

In the Facebook post congratulating the winners of the contest, the Department of Home Economics Education also recognized and thanked the sponsors and judges who have made the celebration a success.
