HE Students Glimpse the Future in Career Talk

A classroom is a small bubble. However, students shall find themselves face-to-face with real life when this bubble bursts. On the 25th of November, the Department of Home Economics Education (DHEEd) and UP Circle of Home Economists (UP CHEc) joined forces to host HE Career Talk: CHEC LIST UNVEILED in order to ease them through such a crucial transition of curriculum-turned careers.


The Career Talk saw 46 attendees as students took their way to Gusali 2B alongside some faculty and CHE members. With the theme, "A Kaleidoscope of Home Economics Professions from a New Perspective," five esteemed guest speakers were invited to tell their stories and unveil perspectives gained from their respective fields. Each speaker spoke for 15 to 20 minutes, followed by an open forum where students could ask further questions and elaborations.


The talk commenced with two speakers from the field of education, Asst. Prof. Judilyn C. Mateo-Nakamura, a faculty member from Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, and Bernabe F. Mayol Jr., LPT, a Junior and Senior High School teacher from The Meridian International Learning Experience, Inc., shared their work in light of public and private institutions, respectively. Following this, as a Development Manager Officer II of the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr. Ian Kevin M. Sevilla spoke of Home Economics in the Government Sector. After a health break, Mr. Abe R. Abarquez, Go-to-Market Manager of Dito Telecommunity and owner of 818 Ocean's Harvest, Inc., talked about the opportunities in the Corporate Sector and Entrepreneurship. The medical field could also be another career path. Emergency Room Physician Dr. Adrienne Belle E. Maramba served as the representative speaker for this last portion, particularly sharing her experiences in Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital.

Aside from a brief background of their work and career gourney, the speakers prepared some talking points such as what inspired them to choose their career path and how home economics became relevant in their career. Ultimately, they imparted the lessons they have learned at work to future BSHE graduates. The encounter lasted three hours.


Asst. Prof. Mary Justine Clarise Trinidad, DHEEd Chairperson, egaged the audience and welcomed the guests in the opening remarks. Meanwhile, UP CHEc's adviser Ma. Afrecita Nieva formally closed the program. They both expressed high hopes for this Career Talk in that undergraduate HE students are inspired to make better-informed decisions about their future line of work.
